Onshore Power Supply (OPS)

Client: Port authorities and shipping companies

Location: Ports of Spain

REGENERA develops solutions for power supply to moored vessels (OPS, Onshore Power Supply), which allow ships to switch off their auxiliary engines during the stopover and connect to the port's electrical grid, reducing CO₂ emissions, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, as well as noise in the port environment.

These works help the ports to meet the Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 (AFIR), which requires shore-side electricity supply for certain types of ships by 2030, and help shipping companies progress towards the targets of FuelEU Maritime.

Among the projects awarded to REGENERA are: electrification of the Juan Sebastián Elcano cruise quay in Cartagena, which includes a specific substation, frequency and voltage conversion systems and ship-to-shore connection equipment, with the first connections planned for the second half of 2027, and OPS system for cruise ships at the Port of A Coruña.

Work carried out

  • Technical-economic feasibility studies in about twenty Spanish ports.
  • Analysis of traffic, port calls and energy demand by type of ship (cruise ships, ferries, ro-ro and container ships).
  • Dimensioning of OPS systems in medium voltage according to the standard IEC/IEEE 80005.
  • Economic and tariff models for the supply service to shipping companies.
  • Requests for access and connection to the distribution network in more than fifteen ports.
  • Engineering and execution, currently underway, of the OPS systems of the cruise terminals in Cartagena and A Coruña.

This project reinforces REGENERA's experience in medium and high-voltage electrical engineering and in decarbonizing the maritime-port sector.
