Transition to Green Energy in European Islands: VPP4Islands Project

Transition to Green Energy in European Islands

VPP4Islands is a project funded under the European framework programme HORIZONTE 2020. The aim of the project is to facilitate the integration of renewable energy resources and to ensure stability and electricity security on geographical islands in Europe, where electricity supply is penalised by limited available resources. The islands of Formentera (Balearic Islands, Spain) and Gökçeada (Turkey) have been chosen as pilots for the project.

Boosting Renewable Energy Integration

VPP4Islands promotes the creation of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) that are able to interoperate between different consumers and producers of electricity, optimising the use of renewable resources and improving overall energy efficiency.

Promoting Self-Sufficiency and Sustainability

VPP4Islands maximises the integration of renewable generation facilities through innovative energy storage approaches based on the use of green hydrogen as an energy vector (Formentera), as well as the use of electric batteries (Gökçeada and Formentera). These resources are managed intelligently to minimise energy costs and carbon footprint, seeking optimal operating points calculated using artificial intelligence algorithms based on consumption, generation and electricity price predictions based on Deep Learning.

Innovation and Collaboration in Energy Management

The consortium of 19 partners involved in the VPP4Islands project underlines the importance of transnational collaboration for innovation in energy management. This collaborative approach ensures that the solutions developed are tailor-made and highly effective for the specific needs of each island. REGENERA, as one of the main partners, focuses on the study and development of solutions for electricity price forecasting and dynamic calculation of energy savings and emissions taking into account the different generation technologies on the grid in real time.

This project represents not only a technological breakthrough, but also a model of international cooperation that could be replicated in other regions to achieve similar sustainability and energy efficiency goals. VPP4Islands is a clear example of how targeted innovation and commitment to sustainability can lead to significant transformations in local and, by extension, global energy systems.
