LIFE Desirows - Innovation in Renewable Energies

LIFE Desirows - Innovation in Renewable Energies

The Life Desirows project, funded by the European Union's LIFE programme, continues to progress with its objective of reducing first osmosis brine and recovering water resources using renewable energy. In February 2023, a technical meeting was held to review the status of the demonstration plant, confirming the commissioning of the EVACOLD evaporation tower. This tower is an efficient natural evaporator to treat brackish wastewater.

This action is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Instituto de Fomento de la Región de Murcia on a pro rata basis.

Solving Environmental Problems

The project addresses the problem of high nitrate content in the groundwater of Campo de Cartagena, a situation that negatively affects the Mar Menor. The proposed technology allows the crystallisation of salts and the elimination of nitrates, which improves water quality without generating additional waste.

REGENERA: Leadership in Energy Efficiency

Regenera, founded in 2007, is an Energy Services Company focused on energy efficiency, renewable energies and environmental protection. It leads the Life Desirows project and collaborates with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and other entities. Regenera offers energy auditing services, control and modelling software, renewable energy integration and energy management of hydraulic infrastructures.

Innovation in Photovoltaic Pumping

The project also promotes the cooperative use of photovoltaics to optimise groundwater pumping for irrigation, based on UPCT doctoral research that recommends grid connection and cooperative use for photovoltaic pumping systems.

Acknowledgements and Dissemination

The Life Desirows project has been recognised at the AEIPRO International Congress of Project Management and Engineering, where Pablo Calleja Cayón was awarded for his Master's thesis on Renewable Energies.
