LIFE Desirows is a demonstration project aimed at removing nitrates from groundwater and achieving complete separation of salts and water in brines. The project will be implemented in the Campo de Cartagena region.
LIFE Desirows (LIFE19 ENV/ES/000447) will develop a new industrial process based on the circular economy that will allow the reuse of this water for irrigation, once the selective separation of dissolved salts is achieved and the nitrates they contain are eliminated.
The LIFE Desirows project (LIFE19 ENV/ES/000447) is managed by a consortium led by the company REGENERA and in which the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), the Community of Irrigators of Arco Sur and other companies from the Region of Murcia with experience in this type of project, such as Hidrogea and Hidrotec, participate.
In addition, the project funded by the EU's LIFE Programme will also allow the reuse of these salts, which contain a large amount of nutrients, as an agricultural fertiliser, as well as for other industrial uses. The entire industrial process combines various technologies based on renewable energies, specifically solar photovoltaic energy and biomass. In this way, the energy consumption required to recycle and reuse brine from underground wells is minimised. The implementation of this system involves:
- An advantage over the production of desalinated seawater is that it is obtained at the same price, but without the generation of waste.
- An improvement in the quality of water reclaimed for the agricultural sector from groundwater wells at an affordable price.
- The use of technologies based on energy efficiency.
