Energy management system with hydrogen

Client: Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital – Innovative Public Procurement by the CDTI

Location: Badalona (Barcelona)

REGENERA executed the project “H2 Hospital” under the Innovative Public Procurement initiative of the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI). The project corresponds to the design, development, integration and validation of an energy management system based on hydrogen to provide “peak-shaving” and “backup” services to the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona, Barcelona, while reducing the emissions of the hospital center.

The installation features a 100 kW electrolyzer capable of producing and storing hydrogen and oxygen (50 and 200 kg respectively), a 100% hydrogen boiler, four 53 kW fuel cells, a 10 kW fuel cell, eight 50 kW hybrid inverters and an installed battery capacity of 246 kWh.

The installation is capable of producing oxygen with a concentration greater than 99%, which would allow it to comply with the Spanish Royal Pharmacopoeia for its use in medicinal applications, in addition to implementing solutions focused on energy efficiency and the utilization of byproducts such as the recovery of heat from fuel cells to produce hot water, or the recovery of water produced in the reaction of the fuel cell to be introduced into the electrolyzer, reducing the water footprint of the installation.
