The Green HY CELL project for new prototypes of green hydrogen generation systems to boost the competitiveness of Spanish industry is one of the two projects awarded to REGENERA under the CDTI Misiones Ciencia en Innovación 2022 call for proposals.
What is green hydrogen generation?
This project relates to green hydrogen generation, which refers to the production of hydrogen from renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind energy. Green hydrogen production is considered a more sustainable alternative to hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, as it does not generate greenhouse gas emissions.in the context of the Green HY CELL project, prototype green hydrogen generation systems are being developed. The aim is to improve the efficiency and the technical and economic feasibility of these systems for commercial scale application.it is important to mention, that the technology for green hydrogen production is still in a developmental stage. But it has the potential to play an important role in the transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy.
Grenn HY CELL project details
Green Hy Cell is the project for the development of new prototypes of green hydrogen generation systems to boost the competitiveness of Spanish industry. It aims to research a new conceptual design of polymeric membrane electrolysers (PEMWE), using alternative materials to those used in current PEM electrolysers, by designing electrodes (anode and cathode) with a low content of noble metals (Ir and Pt, respectively), as well as porous transport layers (PTL) of titanium fibre felt. Porous transport layers (PTLs) of titanium fibre felt for the anode, and gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of carbonaceous nature for the cathode, as well as bipolar plates (BPs) of stainless steels with non-noble (or critical) metal based coatings will be used to assemble a PEM electrolyser (0.5-1 kW) with the optimised materials. In order to optimise the efficiency and sustainability of this type of hydrogen generation system, an in-depth study will be carried out on the validation and scalability of the same in a real environment, with the aim of obtaining sustainable fuel from renewable sources. In order to achieve not only an increase in efficiency, but also a reduction in costs, emissions and dependence on strategic materials, thus increasing the competitiveness of the companies that make up the consortium, an industrial research study will be carried out to complete the circle. The objective is to establish strategies for the recovery of strategic materials (mainly Ir and Pt), with a view to their possible "second life" use in electrolysis systems. The aim is to reduce to "0" the dependence on this type of materials in hydrogen generating systems.
Objectives of the Green HY CELL Development Project
The development of the proposed objectives will be carried out through six different technical activities. The start date is scheduled for 01 October 2022, with an estimated duration of 27 months, until 31 December 2024. The budget of the Green Hy Cell project amounts to a total of 2,539,143 euros for the three years of the project. The multidisciplinary consortium that makes up the Green Hy Cell project is formed by the direct collaboration of five companies and four research groups from three different PROs, promoting collaboration between them at a national level. Generating innovation and production of new products and services of great interest in the sector, laying the foundations for new and effective collaborations between them in the future.in REGENERA, we continue to join the energies of the future, which are not only revolutionising industry, but are also committed to the environment.
